China Underlines Rehabilitation in Afghanistan

China said Friday that smooth rehabilitation is crucial to the peace process in Afghanistan, which has just emerged from war and turbulence.

China said here Friday that smooth rehabilitation is crucial to the peace process in Afghanistan, which has just emerged from war and turbulence.

The statement was made by Chinese Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuanwhile he was addressing a high-level meeting on Afghanistan, whichwas held on the sideline of the annual debate of the 57th General Assembly session.

"Peace and stability go hand in hand with economic development," Tang said. "Rehabilitation provides key guarantee for the Afghanpeace process and will also bring peaceful life to the Afghan people and promote ethnic unity and harmony."

"Rehabilitation in Afghanistan depends on the financial, material and human resources support from the international community," he said.

The Chinese foreign minister called upon parties concerned to honor their generous aid pledges so that assistance will be put inplace and play its role at an early date.

He also called on the United Nations to work more actively on the Afghan reconstruction, saying: "The United Nations needs to play a bigger role in the Afghan rehabilitation. It should help Afghanistan map out the rehabilitation in context of its national conditions, and provide necessary assistance and support to this end."

"As a friendly neighbor of Afghanistan, China has always committed itself to the peace process and rehabilitation there," he said.

China has pledged Afghanistan 150 million US dollars of rehabilitation aid within five years and concluded a subsidiary free aid agreement on economic and technical cooperation worth 30 million dollars.

Foreign Ministers from Canada, China, Denmark, France and Indiaas well as some other countries attended the meeting with the presence of Afghan President Hamid Karzai to help shape the country's future.
