Rescuers are searching for 13 coal miners trapped by a blast in a private coal mine, in Heshan District, Hebi City of central China's Henan Province.

According to Hebi City government, 35 workers were inside the mine when the explosion occurred at around 2:40 a.m. Tuesday. Twenty-two of the workers evacuated safely, while the other 13 were missing.

An investigation by the local authorities found that the mine was operating illegally defying an order for shutdown and rectification of all small coal mines in Hebi. The mine owner first tried to do the rescue by the mine itself, but later reported the incident to local authorities when he failed in the rescue effort.

Local officials have rushed to the scene to direct the rescue operations.
