Government departments should make every effort to help laid-off workers find new jobs, China's President Jiang Zemin told a conference on re-employment in Beijing on Thursday.

Government departments and leaders should give top priority to re-employment efforts and try to figure out feasible solutions to the issue, Jiang said.

Emphasis should be put on measures to help jobless people find work opportunities in local communities, Jiang pointed out.

He said that professional training programs should be launched to help laid-off people become re-employed and a free service should be provided for them. A considerate and efficient service was likely to help those people gain the latest information about the job market and equip themselves with practical skills.

The government would make available favorable policies including financial aids, insurance subsidies and allowances to those who badly needed help, Jiang said. It would offer preferential tax policies for those unemployed people starting their own businesses and companies which recruit laid-off workers.

Based on past experience, the country would aim for a fast-growing economy with ample employment, he noted. In the long run, China would speed up the cultivation of a mature job market.
