Japan can provide logistical support for US military action against Iraq if such action is backed by a UN resolution, a senior official from Japan's Defense Agency said Wednesday.

"Japan will be able to provide US forces with logistical support under current legislation without requiring any revisions if military attacks against Iraq are in line with a UN resolution," said Takemasa Moriya, director general of the agency's Defense Policy Bureau.

Moriya said it is Japan's policy to continue fighting terrorismas long as doing so complies with UN resolutions, according to Japan's Kyodo News.

Moriya made the marks at a luncheon at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan in Tokyo.

Asked what Japan could do if the United States and Britain launch a military attack on Iraq, Moriya said that Japan will respond based on the current special antiterrorism law.

Japan enacted the law on Oct. 29 last year in the wake of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States to extend noncombat logistical support to the US-led forces engaged in Afghanistan.

Japan sent warships and soldiers last October to the Indian Ocean to fuel the US and British warships deployed there.

Japan's Maritime Self-Defense Force ships in the Indian Ocean are providing US and British ships with 40 percent of their fuel requirements, according to Moria.
