New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg lit an "eternal flame" in Battery Park near the Ground Zero, the site of the World Trade Center (WTC) at sunset Wednesday, continuing the anniversary commemoration of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

He handed a candle to United States Secretary of State Collin Powell, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and those invited from a number of countries to participate in the function.

The backdrop was the damaged globe sculpture that once stood inthe plaza of the WTC and is now part of the temporary memorial to the victims of Sept. 11 in Battery Park.

The attacks on the 110-story twin towers by two hijacked passenger planes one year ago claimed 2801 lives, with 91 countries and regions losing their citizens during the tragedy, either as passengers on the planes or tenants in the WTC, Bloomberg noted.

The remembrance in the city began with a ceremony honoring the victims with their names being recited by members of their families and dignitaries. Moments of silence were observed to mark the attacks and the collapse of the towers.

President George W. Bush laid a wreath at Ground Zero Wednesday afternoon after attending commemorative activities at Pentagon anda rural site in Pennsylvania, also the scenes of terrorist attacks.

A city-wide commemoration was going on Wednesday evening in thefive boroughs where people were gathering in cultural activities and candlelight vigils to reflect on the sacrifices on Sept. 11, and give thanks to heroes who saved lives but lost their own.
