China Beefs up IPR Protection

Since introducing a patent law in 1985, China has made rapid advances in intellectual property rights (IPR) protection, a top Chinese IPR official said on Wednesday.

Since introducing a patent law in 1985, China has made rapid advances in intellectual property rights (IPR) protection, a top Chinese IPR official said on Wednesday.

Lin Binghui, deputy head of the State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO), said at the ongoing sixth China International Fair for Investment and Trade that China had put into effect eight IPR protection laws and regulations, including those on patent, copyright and computer software protection.

The latest statistics show enforcement of these laws has also been tightened. China's courts handled 2,143 IPR cases between 1996 and 2000. In 2001, China's IPR administration departments handled 41,163 trademark infringement and 4,416 copyright cases and hunted down 15 illegal compact disc production lines.

Lin said China would further strengthen its cooperation with international IPR agencies in the future, including helping draft international IPR protection rules.

"IPR protection rules should be made fairer so that countries can better share the fruits of scientific and technological advances," said Lin.
