Japan's Role on Iraq Limited: Spokesman
Japan's top government spokesman said Monday that Japan would have a limited role in a US attack on Iraq because of a lack of adequate military means, Kyodo News reported.
Japan's top government spokesman said Monday that Japan would have a limited role in a US attack on Iraq because of a lack of adequate military means, Kyodo News reported.
"Our country has no means to attack Iraq. Should it ever come to it, we would have a limited scope for cooperation," Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yasuo Fukuda was quoted as saying.
"The fundamental issue is whether we have means to get Iraq to let in nuclear weapons inspectors," he said.
"To that end, it's important to apply pressure on Iraq. It's also important to create the will of the international community on the need to have Iraq change its behavior," he said.
Fukuda said a US attack would be a possibility if Iraq refused to accept such an inspection.
