Bus Plunges Into River, 36 Feared Killed in North India

At least 36 people, including 25 women, were feared killed and 16 others injured on Saturday night when a bus plunged into a river in India's northern state of Himachal.

At least 36 people, including 25 women, were feared killed and 16 others injured on Saturday night when a bus plunged into a river in India's northern state of Himachal.

The bus, carrying over 50 pilgrims who were returning after paying obeisance at Khir Ganga shrine, a Hindu holy site, plunged into river Parvati, the Press Trust of India (PTI) reported on Sunday.

The bus rolled down about 60 meters before plunging into the river and most of the survivors were thrown out of the vehicle, the agency quoted policemen as saying.

Two drivers and two conductors were among the killed, they said,adding that six bodies had so far been recovered and search for the remaining was on.

Of the injured, 11 were operate upon at a civil hospital at Kullu, a major town at the center of the state, while condition of three of them was stated as "serious".

A girl, who survived with minor injuries, informed the occupants of a passing jeep of the incident and they, in turn, informed the police, according to PTI.

Difficult terrain and heavy rains hampered the rescue operations. Though a rescue team reached the site Saturday night, the spot was inaccessible.

Rescue teams of fire brigade, home guards, police and local people were making all out efforts using a crane to lift the bus from the water, police said.

Meanwhile, PTI reported in another dispatch that three people were killed and 18 others injured on Sunday when the bus they weretaking collided head-on with a truck near Jaipur, capital of the northwest state Rajasthan.
