Chinese Premier Meets South African Deputy President

Visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met with South African Deputy President Jacob Zuma here Thursday, saying that China hopes to expand cooperation with South Africa under the basis of equality and mutual benefit.

Zhu told Zuma that he just held talks with President Thabo Mbeki, adding that the two sides are satisfied with their closer relations and put forward some new proposals for the possible cooperative fields.

"China hopes to expand cooperation with South Africa in various fields under the basis of equality and mutual benefit, because such cooperation is not only in accordance with the fundamental interests of the two countries, but also are conducive to increasing the voice of developing countries and safeguarding their justifiable rights and interests," said Zhu, who is currently on a working visit to the African country.

He congratulated South Africa on its successful hosting of the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), saying that the summit hosted by South Africa makes it clear that the international community have recognized and appreciated the country's achievements in sustainable development.

"The summit provided a chance for us to discuss some major issues hindering global sustainable development and take concerted actions to deal with the challenges in the 21st Century," said Zhu,who also led a Chinese delegation to participate in the WSSD in Johannesburg, which adopted a comprehensive plan of action after 10 days of hard negotiations.

The plan, dubbed Plan of Implementation, will serve as a platform to tackle the world's worsening poverty and environmental degradation.

For his part, Zuma said South Africa and China enjoyed a long history of friendly contacts, adding that the South African government and the ruling African National Congress of South Africa attached great importance to the relations with China.

"We think China plays a balancing role in the international arena and China' s prosperity will increase the strength of the vast developing countries," said the South African deputy president.

South Africa pays much attention to the South-to-South cooperation and hopes to make more exchanges and cooperation with China, Zuma said.
