Iraqi President Vows to Fight in Defiance of US Threats
Iraqi President Saddam Hussein on Wednesday vowed to fight in a way that "makes the enemy angry" amid mounting US threats to oust him, the official Iraqi News Agency reported.
Iraqi President Saddam Hussein on Wednesday vowed to fight in a way that "makes the enemy angry" amid mounting US threats to oust him, the official Iraqi News Agency reported.
Saddam made the remarks in separate meetings with some parliamentarian chiefs of Arab countries who were visiting Baghdad for a special session of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (AIPU) on Tuesday and Wednesday.
He was quoted as saying Iraq would fight in a way that "makes the enemy angry", but still wanted a "comprehensive solution" in line with UN Council resolutions to end a decade-old embargo on thecountry.
Iraq wants "a comprehensive solution that can lead to the lifting of the embargo in line with the UN Security Council resolutions," Saddam told Yemeni Parliament Speaker Abdullah al-Ahmar during their meeting earlier in the day.
Iraq has been under sweeping UN sanctions since its invasion of Kuwait in August 1990. The embargo will not be lifted until the world body has verified that Iraq has eliminated all of its weaponsof mass destruction.
The Iraqi leader's remarks came as the United States is seeking to convince the world of the threats posed by Iraq and justify a "regime change" in the country, possibly by a full-scale war.
US President George W. Bush, accusing Iraq of pursuing weapons of mass destruction and supporting terrorism, has repeatedly vowed to topple Saddam with all the tools at his disposal, including military actions.
