China's top legislator Li Peng said Tuesday in Bangkok that as China faces new challenges along with its accession to the World Trade Organization, it wishes to learn from Thailand on how to cope with the situation since Thailand has rich experience in this aspect.

Li made the remarks when meeting with Chuan Leepai, former Prime Minister of Thailand and leader of the opposition parties ofthe parliament.

Li said that China is glad to see that Dr. Supachai has taken the position of secretary-general of the WTO, who is not only the first person in the organization representing Asian countries, but also standing for developing countries as a whole.

Chuan said he can be sure that China will successfully solve the problems that come along with its membership in the WTO, with timely and efficient adjustments in economic policies.

During the hour-long discussion, Li expressed his appreciation of Chuan's contribution to the development of bilateral ties when he served as the Prime Minister of Thailand for two terms.

Chuan said he is still grateful to China for its support to his government during the time of Asian economic crisis.

"China promised not to devalue its RMB then, and it has never done it ever since," Chuan said.

"We speak highly of the fast economic progress China has achieved even though it maintains the stability of its currency," he said.
