Iran Counter Attacks Iraq for Serving Israeli Interests
The Iranian Foreign Ministry rebuffed on Monday Iraq's accusation that the Islamic republic has never cooperated with the Arabs against Israel, as the latest war of words between the two neighbors is unfolding.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry rebuffed on Monday Iraq's accusation that the Islamic republic has never cooperated with the Arabs against Israel, as the latest war of words between the two neighbors is unfolding.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Hamid Reza Asefi told a press conference that Iraq served Zionist (Israeli) interests by "imposing a war on Iran and occupying Kuwait."
Asefi said Baghdad had been a "supporter of the Zionist regime" by waging a destructive war on Iran and "sowing the seeds of discord among Muslim nations."
When Iraq occupied Kuwait and fomented a conflict among Arab nations, it was Israel that benefited most from the chaos, he said.
On an anti-Iran statement, Iraqi Vice President Taha Yassin Ramadan said Saturday Iran chooses to ally itself with Zionists whenever Arabs and Israelis confront.
Countering Ramadan's remarks, Asefi said the Iraqi veep knows better than anybody else which country has served Israel the most.
Asefi also said it is regrettable to see that Iraqi officials make the most awful mistakes on very sensitive occasions.
The United States has threatened to unseat Iraqi President Saddam Hussein on the ground that Iraq is developing weapons of mass destruction and refusing to allow arms inspectors to return tothe country.
Asefi said he hoped that the Iraqi government would cooperate with the UN arms inspectors while stressing Tehran opposes any US attacks on Iraq to topple the Iraqi regime.
He said the world would not accept the fact that a country topples a government in another country by military force.
