Vice-Premier Urges Faster Pace of Western Development
The pace for developing the west of China should speed up, Chinese Vice-Premier Wen Jiabao said during his recent tour of the northwestern provinces of Qinghai and Gansu.
Wen, also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, visited the rural areas of both provinces from Aug. 28 to Sept. 2.
Wen focused on agricultural restructuring, afforestation projects and grassland protection during his tour.
He said the strategy for developing the west is in line with the national policy of stimulating domestic demand. Western regions should seize the opportunity to improve their infrastructure and the living standard of local people.
He asked local officials to keep the people in mind and take care of farmers in particular. He said more efforts should be made to help poor farmers by relieving their burdens and raising their income.
Wen also said revitalizing agriculture through technology is a positive approach for further developing rural areas.
