The high-level segment of the Earth Summit, officially known as the World Summit on Sustainable Development, opened Monday Johannesburg.
During the three-day meeting, which is expected to end on Wednesday, more than 100 heads of state and government or their representatives will discuss a range of issues concerning poverty reduction and environmental protection, and express their commitments to sustainable development.
At the end of the meeting, they are expected to endorse a political declaration renewing their political commitments to sustainable development and a plan of implementation for meeting goals of preserving the environment and erasing poverty.
