World leaders host the World Summit on Sustainable Development Monday to declare their commitment to build a humane and caring global society of 6 billion population on the earth.
World leaders host the World Summit on Sustainable Development Monday to declare their commitment to build a humane and caring global society of 6 billion population on the earth.
The high level segment of the WSSD opened at 9:10 a.m. (0710 GMT) at the Sandton Convention Center, Johannesburg. More than 100 heads of state and government attended the meeting.
As president of the Earth Summit, South Africa President Thabo Mebki said at the opening address: "The progress they have achieved should enable us, the heads of state, government and delegation, representatives of civil society and business leaders,to take the necessary decisions that will make it possible for us to emerge from this summit with a concrete plan of action that will give meaning to our theme - People, Planet and Prosperity."
His address will be followed by United Nations General -Secretary Kofi Annan and Han Seung-soo, president of the fifty-sixth session of the General Assembly.
Five children will give speeches, representing the future generation, including Tiyiselani Manganyi, who is believed to be the youngest delegate of the summit.
