Host China has stunned the hockey world by winning its first ever major international title after a dramatic penalty stroke victory over Argentina in the women's Champions Trophy hockey tournament Sunday in Macao.
China's giant keeper Nie Ya Li was the heroine, saving three of Argentina's four strokes.
Argentina trailed 0-2 at half time and in a burst of attacking hockey in the final seven minutes of the match, drew level to take the game to extra time.
China struck twice through Mai Shooyan in the 17th minute and Hou Xiaolan in the 27th minute in the first half wherein no team created a clear tactical advantage, other than for China on the scoreboard.
The second half was all China until Argentine coach Sergio Vigil made a tactical change in the 62nd minute and pushed mercurial forward Lucia Aymar into the striker line, and played with one defender less.
The move worked, with Aymar feeding Vanina Oneto for her two goals within four minutes of each other to take the game to 2-2.
Extra time was a conservative affair between the two teams, with neither team willing to take risks to score in lieu of conceding a breakaway.
With the game moving to strokes, the 2,000 strong crowd were vocal in support of the Chinese team as they moved to take each stroke.
Goalkeeper of the Tournament, China's Nie Yali saved three of Argentina's four quality strokes, to give China an unbeatable 3-1 lead.
