Turkish, Iranian FMs Call for Consultation to End Iraqi Crisis

Turkish Foreign Minister Sukru Sina Gurel said Sunday in Tehran that government change in Iraq must come from the people of that country, the state-run IRNA news agency reported.
During a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Kamal Kharazi, Gurel said that the Iraqi crisis, amid US threats to unleash a military onslaught on Baghdad, has to be settled peacefully.
Echoing Gurel's remarks, Kharazi called for consultations among regional countries over the issue to prevent a "big regional crisis."
"The Iraqi regime is unpredictable. It has imposed a lot of damage on the region with its incursions during the past two decades," Kharazi said.
However, "no foreign country has the right to interfere in that country's affairs," he said.
Consultations among Iraq's neighbors are key to prevent insecurity in the region, Kharazi said, while adding that "any development in Iraq affects its neighbors and the region."
Exchange of views among neighbors by examining strategies to exhort Iraq to cooperate with the United Nations is an effective step to prevent a big regional crisis, he said.
The United States has threatened to unseat Iraqi President Saddam Hussein on the ground that Iraq was developing weapons of mass destruction and refusing arms inspectors into the country.
Gurel arrived here Saturday for a two-day visit to discuss bilateral ties as well as regional and international issues with Iranian officials.
