Sri Lankan President Opposes Lifting Ban on Tamil Tiger

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga opposes moves by her co-habitation government to lift a ban on Tamil Tiger rebels before peace talks start in Thailand this month, local reports quoted her office as saying Sunday.

Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga opposes moves by her co-habitation government to lift a ban on Tamil Tiger rebels before peace talks start in Thailand this month, local reports quoted her office as saying Sunday.

In a one-page statement President Kumaratunga's office said the1998 ban on the rebel Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) should be removed based on the success of the peace talks, the reports said.

Kumaratunga's co-habitation government led by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe vowed to remove the ban by September 6 so asto meet the demand of the Tigers to enter peace talks brokered by Norwegian in Thailand on September 16.
