County Party Chief Sentenced to Death for Mine Flood Cover-up
A local court rejected the appeal of a county official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and maintained the former death penalty to him for trying to cover up a mine accident last year that killed 81 people.
Wan Ruizhong, Party secretary of the Nandan County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwestern China, was convicted of covering up the July 17, 2001 accident and taking bribes worth of 3.21 million yuan (nearly 387,000 US dollars) between 1999 and 2001, according to investigations of the Guangxi Higher People's Court.
Investigators found that the deadly flood in the illegally run Lajiapo Mine was a direct result of mismanagement and poorly conducted explosions.
