The Myanmar authorities released 44 more women prisoners recently on humanitarian grounds, according to a government statement Wednesday.
The women prisoners, who are all either pregnant or with young children, were freed from various "correctional facilities," the statement said.
The release has brought the total number of freed women prisoners, incarcerated for various criminal activities, to more than 360 in recent several months, the statement added.
The release came after Razali Ismail, special envoy of UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, visited Myanmar in early August.
Meanwhile, the Myanmar authorities have also been releasing members of the opposition National League for Democracy and the total number of such freed members has so far come to 309 since January 2001.
