Chinese President Jiang Zemin said Tuesday that his government hopes to expand cooperation with Moldova on the basis of five principles of peaceful coexistence and seek common development.

President Jiang made the remarks during a meeting with the president of the parliament of Moldova, Eugenia Ostapciuk, who arrived here Sunday on a goodwill visit to China.

Jiang said he is fully confident in the bright future of Sino-Moldova relations. He urged the National People's Congress (NPC) of China and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) to have more exchanges with the Moldovan parliament.

Jiang visited Moldova last year. He spoke about that brief visit to Moldova and extended congratulations to the Moldovan guests on the National Day of Moldova, observed on Tuesday.

The Chinese president said that following years of joint effort since the two countries established full diplomatic relations 10 years ago, bilateral ties between the two countries have become "better and better".

Ostapciuk said Moldova-China relations have made still greater progress since Jiang's visit to Moldova. She said she is glad to witness the great achievements China made in its economy, culture and social causes.

In addition, Ostapciuk said she believed that her current visit to China would help increase mutual understanding and friendship between the people of the two countries and the further strengthening of bilateral relations.
