Chinese Top Legislator to Visit Three Asian Countries, Australia

Chinese top legislator Li Peng will pay an official goodwill visit to Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia from September 3 onwards, announced a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Monday.

Chinese top legislator Li Peng will pay an official goodwill visit to Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Australia from September 3 onwards, announced a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Monday.

Li, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, will meet with leaders of the four countries and have in-depth exchanges of views on bilateral relations as well as on the international and regional situation, Foreign Ministry spokesman Kong Quan said.

Li is invited by President Uthai Pimchaichon of the National Assembly of Thailand, Chairman Amien Rais of the People's Consultative Assembly of Indonesia, Speaker Jose De Venecia of the House of Representatives of the Philippines, and Speaker Neil Andrew of the Australian House of Representatives and President Paul Calvert of the Australian Senate, Kong said.

"The aim of the visit is to enhance mutual understanding and trust, expand consensus, and further promote the overall development of friendly relations and cooperation between China and the four countries," Kong said.

During the visit, Li will have wide-ranging contact with parliamentarians and people from economic, social and other circles, the spokesman said.
