DPRK, Japan to Decide in One Month on Resuming Talks on Normalizing Ties
The Democratic People's Republicof Korea (DPRK) and Japan have agreed to decide in one month whether to resume talks at an early date on normalizing bilateral ties, said a joint statement issued Monday in Pyongyang.

The two sides said in the statement, which was issued at the conclusion of two days of talks, that they shared the view that itis important for Tokyo and Pyongyang to improve bilateral ties andestablish diplomatic relations for peace and stability in the region.
Senior diplomats from the two countries started the two-day meeting in Pyongyang, which was aimed at setting up diplomatic relations that have been nonexistent between the two countries.
Both sides agreed to examine the possibility of resuming at an early date the talks for opening the diplomatic relations, by way of pushing ahead with a package solution of all issues related to the normalization of relations and pending problems between the DPRK and Japan, in a month to come.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed various problems and outstanding issues, and agreed that it is essential for them to address and settle these issues with political will.
They also agreed that it is important to work for detente on the Korean Peninsula and the areas around it, and to promote talkswith the parties concerned in this regard.
During the talks, the two sides also discussed the issue of aiding Korean A-bomb victims and decided to hold further negotiations at the working level in the future.
The DPRK and Japan have held eight rounds of normalization talks since January 1991.
