World Summit on Sustainable Development Kicks off

The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) kicked off at 10:20 a.m. (0820 GMT)Monday in Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa.

The World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) kicked off at 10:20 a.m. (0820 GMT) Monday in Johannesburg, the largest city in South Africa.

The first item of business will be the election of the president and the adoption of procedures and the controversial agenda.

Six plenary sessions will follow around key areas, such as health, agriculture, bio-diversity, water and sanitation, energy, trade and education.

On Sept. 2, more than 100 heads of state will arrive at the Sandton Convention Center, where various debates will take place.

Representatives from up to 50 governments will participate in each round table.

By Sept. 4, a final document should be adopted.

The conference is a follow-up to the 1992 Rio Summit in Brazil.
