One hundred and four heads of state and government are expected to attend the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) to address the challenges facing the world, the United Nations announced Sunday.
WSSD Secretary-General Nitin Desai told a press conference that more than 9,000 delegates had been accredited at the summit by Saturday night, including 4,179 government delegates, more than 3,000 members from civil society and over 2,000 journalists around the world.
On United States President George W. Bush's decision to be absent from the summit, Desai said the US government has been fully engaged on the summit as it is actively participating in the negotiation process.
The official opening of the summit will take place Monday with an address by South African President Thabo Mbeki. Desai will then formally address the plenary, followed by UN Environment Program Executive Director Klaus Toepfer.
The WSSD will review progress in implementing Agenda 21, the plan of action for sustainable development that was agreed in Rio,and develop a plan for the further implementation of sustainable development policies and programs worldwide.
