The US government, under pressure from around the world against its protective steel trade policy introduced in March, announced Thursday the exclusion of another 178 steel products from tariffs, the final set this year.
The US Commerce Department, said in a statement that it is also the seventh set of steel products excluded from tariffs imposed in March. The US government has, so far, excluded a total of 727 steel products from the tariffs since they were imposed.
The latest announcement has concluded the review of all pending exclusion requests that were filed on or before May 20, 2002. New requests will be able to submitted later this year for consideration by March 2003, said the official statement.
The US government imposed tariffs which ranged as high as 30 percent on March 5, 2002 to protect its domestic steel industry. The measures, however, triggered mounting criticisms from around the world.
Many countries said the tariffs violated the World Trade Organization rules and some even threatened to adopt retaliatory tariffs of their own.
