As the world's biggest developing country, China should develop a broad food-processing base, while modernizing its food industry, a foreign expert told Xinhua in Beijing on Thursday.

Walter Spiess, president of the International Union of Food Science and Technology, said China's food industry had made great progress in recent years.

He said China had a wealth of agricultural products, and was a huge market with enormous potential.

The most urgent task for China's agricultural industry was to increase the total output of agricultural products to achieve independence from imported products, Spiess said.

While developing its food industry, China must pay special attention to food safety, he added. The government must standardize the food processing industry, and every producer should abide by relevant regulations.

Suggesting China promote modern technology to develop its food industry in a sustainable way and raise efficiency, Spiess said how to adopt more energy-saving processing methods, especially in the use of water resources, was an important problem the country had to solve.

He said he was confident that China's food industry would have a wonderful opportunity for development after its WTO entry. Although competition from the American and European food industry was fierce, China had certain advantages with such crops as fruits and vegetables.

Official statistics show that China now ranks as the world's largest producer of grains, oil crops, fruit, beans, meat, eggs and seafood. However, the farm produce processing industry is still in its infancy. Only 30 percent of the total output is processed before reaching markets, compared with 80 percent in industrialized countries.

Spiess is here attending the International Symposium on Developmental Strategy in Processing of the Agricultural Products-Food Industry.
