The Israeli army early Thursday arrested a top leader of the Palestinian Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Wajeeh Faqoos, in the West Bank town of Qalqilya, Hamas sources said.

Israeli Radio Arabic service confirmed that Faqoos was arrested when a special Israeli army unit raided his house in the town that has been reoccupied by the Israeli army two months ago.

Three other Palestinians were also arrested in the West Bank towns of Bethlehem and Jenin, the radio added.

Palestinian medical sources said that eight Palestinians were injured by Israeli troops' gunfire in the West Bank towns of Nablusand Jenin during chasing Palestinians who tried to ignore an Israeli army roadblock.

In Gaza, a Palestinian public security statement said that two Palestinians were injured in the town of Kahn Younis in southern Gaza Strip when Israeli soldiers opened intensive fire at Al Amal neighborhood in the town.

The statement said that Israeli naval forces arrested two Palestinian fishermen on the shores of Gaza, denouncing the action "is part of the (Israeli) continued policy to tighten its tough measures against the Palestinians."

In Rafah town on borders between southern Gaza Strip and Israel,Israeli army bulldozers demolished one of the Palestinian residents' houses, the statement added.

The Israeli actions against Palestinians came in the wake of a joint meeting between Israeli and Palestinian security officials on Wednesday on implementation of an earlier agreement between the two sides on a gradual Israeli army pullout from the occupied territories.

Brig. Gen. Abdel Razaq Al Majayda, public security chief in Gaza said Wednesday meeting between top Israeli and Palestinian security officers had not led to any positive results and achieved no progress.
