Vice-Premier Qian Qichen Wednesday met the delegation of All-Africa Association for Chinese Reunification, speaking highly of the contributions made by overseas Chinese to the nation's reunification.

The delegation was headed by Donald Wong, chairman of the Transvaal Chinese Association in South Africa.

Qian told his guest that the reunification of the motherland is one of the three major tasks facing the Chinese people in the new century, and also a sacred mission for the Chinese nation, including Taiwan people and overseas Chinese.

Chen Shui-bian's splittist remark of "one country on each side'' and his proposed "referendum'' is similar to the "state-to-state'' remarks by his predecessor Lee Teng-hui, Qian said.

Chen's statement has set new obstructions to cross-Straits relations, causing uneasiness in Taiwan and troubles in the international community. He was widely criticized by Chinese at home and abroad and international public opinion as well, Qian added.

Qian pointed out that pursuing peace, development and stability is the mainstream opinion in Taiwan and any attempt defying the one-China principle is doomed to failure, Qian said.

Also Wednesday, Xinhua published a bylined article warning Taiwan separatists to stop their activities.

The article says that after "Taiwan independence'' diehard Annette Lu ended her tour of Southeast Asia in complete failure, she concealed the fact from the Taiwan people on the one hand, and on the other hand fabricated lies that Taiwan's "international living space'' is being "strangled'' by the Chinese mainland.

This farce by Lu, just like that of Chen Shui-bian and Lee Teng-hui, was merely a gamble in the interests of their party but at the cost of the cross-Straits relationship and the interests of the Taiwan people.

Chen and Lee always claimed that they wanted to earn "international living space'' for Taiwan. Their activities have given the most explicit explanation of so-called living space, which is the space to help them totally separate Taiwan from China, as well as space for them to profit themselves.

Chen's "one country on each side'' and Lee's "state-to-state'' remarks have the same root: separating Taiwan from China.

There is no compromise between reunification and separatism, for reunification is in the fundamental interest of all Chinese people, including the Taiwan people, says the article.

Most countries and international organizations, including the United Nations, hold to the one-China policy, admitting Taiwan is part of China.

"There is no room in international society for Taiwan separatists, and their so-called 'practical diplomacy' is doomed to failure,'' the article stressed.
