Senior CPC Leader Confident about Continued Economic Growth
Jia Qinglin, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), said here Wednesday that he is confident that China's economy will continue to grow at seven to eight percent annually.

Jia, also secretary of the CPC Beijing Municipal Committee, made the remarks when responding to questions of skepticism about China's sustained economic growth rate, at a meeting with Robert Scalapino, a well-known American China expert.
Jia explained that the energy of the Chinese people, oppressed during the era of the planned economy, has been unleashed and thatChina's production forces continue to be emancipated and developed.
China's strong market demand has served as a powerful motor forrapid economic growth, he aBut Jia noted that China's economic power is still weak compared with that of the United States. China's gross national product (GDP) was only 10 trillion yuan (about 1.21 trillion US dollars), compared with the US GDP of 10 trillion US dollars.
