North Part of West-East Electricity Transmission Project Starts Construction

With the approval of the State Council, China's north part of the west-east electricity transmission project began construction on August 20. The south, north and central power transmission routes will enter into the stage for full construction.

According to the "10th Five Year Plan", China will focus on the construction of three power transmission routes as of the west, the north and the central.

The one in the south will be centered on the development of thermal power and water power in China's southwest region, then transfer electricity to Guangdong area. The central route will be constructed for transmitting electricity to the areas in Central and East China. The north one will be transferred from Inner Mongolia, Shanxi, Shaanxi to Beijing, Tianjin and Tangshan areas.

The total investment of the north part project is RMB 19.25 billion yuan, which will be completed by 2006.

After completion, it will increase the power supply in the western region and meet electricity needs in Beijing, Tianjin and Tangshan areas.

According to reports, the construction is just one section of the north part of the west-east electricity transmission.
