US Secretary of State Colin Powell will head a delegation to take part in next week's global Earth Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, with a focus on fighting poverty.
US President George W. Bush, who designated Powell to represent the United States at the summit, said in a statement Monday that "poverty remains a huge and urgent global problem that demands action by the entire world community."
Powell, who will be in Johannesburg on Sept. 3-4, will deliver a statement at the summit and meet with leaders of other countries.
The Earth Summit, or the World Summit on Sustainable Development, is slated to be held in Johannesburg from Aug. 26 to Sept. 4 and is expected to be the largest UN-sponsored summit in history with a participation of an estimated 60,000 delegates.
About 100 heads of state and government have indicated their willingness to attend the summit, according to the United Nations.
The Johannesburg summit is a follow-up to the 1992 summit in Rio de Janeiro, at which Bush's father, former US President George Bush, turned up at the last minute.
