China's State Council has published a circular calling for government departments to ensure food safety and safeguard people's health.
The purpose of the notice is to ensure long-term sufficient supply, to improve the quality and safety of food, and to further promote structural adjustment in the agriculture sector and increase farmers' incomes.
The notice urges related government departments to establish safety standards for food production, transportation, storage and circulation.
It stresses infrastructure construction and management of markets of grain, meat, vegetables and other agricultural products.
According to the notice, government departments at all levels should provide preferential policies as well as guidance on food issues and strengthen examination procedures on food quality. Efforts should also be made to inform the public of food safety.
Government leaders, such as municipal mayors, should be responsible for food supply and safety, said the notice.
The notice also requires the establishment of an information service for farmers, food producing enterprises, and the public about the demand and supply situation.
