An Air China aeroplane Boeing 747-400 arrived smoothly in New York airport on August 17. The captain who conducted the flight is Gao Dianbang, assistant to President of Air China. This indicates the success of Air China's maiden voyage to fly over the North Pole, a flight to verify the possibility of the air-route.
To carry out the task for the verification of the air-route, Air China dispatched the ablest crew. Among them not only the captain was taken up by Gao Dianbang, Assistant to President of Air China, other members had also conducted special planes for state leaders with everybody having an outstanding record of flying safely for more than 20,000 hours.
According to Wang Yinxiang, Deputy Party Secretary of Air China the air-rout that Air China followed this time was from Beijing to New York, flying over the North Pole. It has been proved an effective route for linking Beijing up with the North America, including from some relevant areas of Canada to Beijing, thereby providing an easier and quicker air-passage for the masses of passengers. Besides, the air-current over the North Pole is smooth and stable with less bumping and passengers will feel better to fly on. Moreover, with the improvement of amusement and food service on Air China the comfortableness for passengers will be greatly enhanced.
Air China has planned to fly from Beijing to New York via the North Pole in the later half of September. When the air-route is open to traffic the flying hours from Beijing to New York will be cut down to 13 hours from the previous 17 hours, a reduction of more than 3 hours. As this is a direct flight it has saved a lot of trouble and tiredness to land and take off along the way as happened in the past. This is the first direct flight from China to New York.
As revealed by person of Air China, Air China will resume Beijing - New York - Beijing direct flight on Sept 27 by using B747-400 aircraft with the forward trip to fly over the far-east route and the return via the North Pole.
