The World Bank will provide a 220 million US dollars of credit to rehabilitate Vietnam's rural power network, a source from the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry diclosed Monday.

The credit, which is for the Rural Energy Project, is agreed tobe implemented in the World Bank's program for the fisical year of2004.

Under a recent survey on rural electrification in 47 provinces and cities of Vietnam, about 5,500 out of the total 6,500 communeshave access to electricity.

However, 23 percent of the electricity-accessed communes see the rate of households accessing to electricity below 60 percent.

Improving rural electricity access to people in Vietnam is critical to eliminating poverty and redressing imbalances in different regions in national development.
