The United States has been prepared to provide 8 million US dollars to support Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's opponents, the State Department announced on Thursday.
The United States has been prepared to provide 8 million US dollars to support Iraqi President Saddam Hussein's opponents, the State Department announced on Thursday.
State Department spokesman Philip Reeker said the 8 million dollars would be given to the Iraqi National Congress (INC), an umbrella coalition of some smaller Iraqi opposition groups, to publish a newspaper and resume television broadcasts against President Saddam, and to maintain other activities of the INC.
The US announced the funds amid growing speculation that the administration of President George W. Bush is planning a military strike to overthrow President Saddam.
The Bush administration recently sped up its effort to seek a regime change in Iraq by increasing contacts with Iraqi opposition groups.
The State Department also planned to spend 6.6 million dollars in humanitarian aid for needy Iraqis inside and outside of Iraq, Reeker said.
