Telephone Users in China Hit 380 Million by End of July

By the end of July, the number of China's fixed telephone subscriber had reached 201 million, meanwhile subscriber of mobile phone hit 180 million. Putting the two figures together, China's total telephone user has reached 380 million, ranking world first.

By the end of July, the number of China's fixed telephone subscriber had exceeded 200 million to reach 201 million, as lately learned of from the Ministry of Information Industry (MII). Subscriber of mobile phone also reached 180 million. Putting the two together, China's total telephone users have reached 380 million, ranking world first. The national telephone popularity has risen to 30.22 sets per hundred persons.

China's fixed phone users reached 10 million in 1992 and 100 million in 1999. It took only three years to grow from 100 million from 1999 to today's 200 million.

Mobile phone develops even faster than fixed one. Since the service opened in 1988, the number of subscriber had risen to 100 million by March 2001, a time-span of 13 years only. The number would at the latest further exceed 200 million by the end of this year, MII estimated, that is to say, 100 million more subscribers in less than two years.

China's telecommunication industry maintained a fast-speed growth this year, as reported, with a newly added user number of 55.752 million during the first seven months, 20.655 million for fixed phone and 35.097 million for mobile phone. Besides, the national telecom service earned an income of 307,991 million yuan, a growth of 28.69 percent over the same period of previous year.
