Israel charged on Wednesday the jailed Palestinian Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti with murder, incitement of murder, and participation in organizing activities ina terrorist group.
The indictment, filed in the Tel Aviv District Court, branded Barghouti an "arch-terrorist whose hands are bloodied by dozens of terror actions."
In the court, Barghouti told reporters before the hearing in Hebrew that "the uprising will be victorious", added that "I was trying to do everything for peace between the two peoples, I believe the best solution is two states for two peoples."
He stressed that Israel's "policy of occupation will not lead tosecurity. Security will only be achieved in one way, by peace, and peace will only be achieved by the end of the occupation."
Barghouti is the general secretary of the Palestinian mainstreamFatah movement in the West Bank, and the leader of Fatah's militarywing of Tanzim.
But Israel accused him of heading another Fatah's radical military wing -- Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, which has claimed responsibility for dozens of suicide bombing and shooting attacks, killing and wounding many Israelis in the 22-month-old violent conflict.
Barghouti, the most popular Palestinian leader apart from Palestinian National Authority (PNA) Chairman Yasser Arafat, has been jailed in Jerusalem's Russian Compound after he was arrested by the Israel Defense Forces in the Operations of Defense Shield onApril 15.
Barghouti was accused as a major participant in decision-making that in the past two years perpetrated dozens of attacks in which dozens of Israeli citizens lost their lives and many hundreds were wounded.
Israel's General Security Service, or Shin Bet, said that Barghouti led, directed, financed and ran many terrorist operationsagainst Israeli targets using key operatives, including Nasser Awis, Ra'ad Carmi, and others, all subsequently assassinated by Israel.
