Musharraf Reaffirms Commitment for Free and Fair Elections

Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf has reaffirmed commitment to hold free and fair general elections in October and appealed to the people to elect honest and dedicated persons to lead the country in the 21st century.

Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf has reaffirmed commitment to hold free and fair general elections in October and appealed to the people to elect honest and dedicated persons to lead the country in the 21st century.

In his message to the nation to mark the country's 55th Independence Day (August 14), Musharraf said, "I take this opportunity to reaffirm my government's commitment to hold free and fair elections in October this year."

Musharraf appealed to the people "to exercise their right to vote with responsibility so that we elect honest, efficient and dedicated persons of integrity who will lead Pakistan into the 21st century realizing Pakistan's full potential."

The country today is faced with multiple challenges, offering both opportunities and perils. "Patriotism demands national unity to avoid perils and grasp opportunities," Musharraf said.

Pakistan declared independence on August 14, 1947 and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan was founded on March 23, 1956. Hence,Independence Day is marked on August 14 and National Day is markedon March 23 in Pakistan.
