Taiwan Private Groups Protest 'One Country on Each Side' Claim

Several private groups in Taipei Tuesday went to the headquarters of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to protest the "one country on each side (of the Taiwan Straits)" claim made by Chen Shui-bian, according to report from Taipei.

The groups, including the China Unification Union, the Workers'Party and the Association for Laborers' Human Rights, slammed Chen's "one country on each side" fallacy, saying it has heightened tensions between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits and has worsened the island's economy, the report said.

The report said protesters chanted "one China, peace between the two sides," and "one country on each side, never will there bedays of peace."

Furious protesters threw eggs at Chen's portrait in front of the building and grappled with police when trying to enter DPP headquarters. The protest ended peacefully, however.
