Independent Lawmaker Chung Mong-joon said, Monday, he was carefully assessing whether or not to enter a bid for the presidency in a phone interview with a Chosun Ilbo reporter. Chung is S. Korean Football Association chairman and a vice president of FIFA.

Chung said many people were saying time was running out after the World Cup, but he thought he had sufficient time, adding that he would announce his stance in early September.

He said he didn't feel the new party formed from the Millennium Democratic Party should hold a second primary adding he would not compete against Roh Mu-hyun if it did.

When asked whether he would join the new party, Chung replied that the new political party should be clear in its identify above all else, but if it was only characterized simply by being anti-Lee Hoi-chang associates, he would not. He added he was looking at many different angles including an independent bid.
