Colombian government forces on Monday killed eight members of the country's largest guerrilla group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), in the latest operation against rebels.

Four FARC members were killed in Valledupar of the northern state of Cesar and another four in Labranzagrande, Boyaca state, some 260 kilometers northeast of Bogota, said the military.

Government forces engaged FARC rebels in several places on Monday. They also deactivated a car-bomb believed to be left by the FARC on a rural road near Granada, south of capital Bogota.

President Alvaro Uribe's hardline position on rebels has provoked terrorist retaliation from the 17,000-strong FARC which has killed 21 people and injured about 70 others since Uribe took office last Wednesday.

Earlier, the FARC has, as a part of its strategy, forced with death threats many of the country's town mayors to quit.

Last Thursday, Uribe announced a plan to recruit more than 1 million civilians as information collectors against the FARC.

The decades-old civil war in Colombia kills thousands of civilians every year.
