Death Toll in India's Bihar Floods Mounts to 275

The death toll in the recent spell of floods in east India's Bihar state Monday rose to 275 as the overall situation was likely to aggravate further following incessant rains in the catchment areas of the major rivers in the upper reaches of Nepal.

The death toll in the recent spell of floods in east India's Bihar state Monday rose to 275 as the overall situation was likely to aggravate further following incessant rains in the catchment areas of the major rivers in the upper reaches of Nepal.

State relief and rehabilitation department officials told reporters that 59 fresh deaths were reported from the flood-hit districts of Sitamarhi, Khagaria, Supaul, Darbhanga, Madhubani Gopalganj and Saharsa during the past 48 hours, taking the toll inthe current spell of floods to 275.

According to a central water commission report, the rivers likeBurhi Gandak, Kosi, Bagmati, and Kamala Balan were rising steadilyand overtopped the danger level at various places along their courses.

Nearly 14 million people continue to reel under the impact of floods in more than 6,500 villages spread over 21 districts in Bihar so far.

The floods have caused extensive damage to the private and public property, besides standing crops worth over 2.5 billion rupees (51.55 million US dollars) so far.

Bihar government has sought a central government assistance of 12 billion rupees (247 million dollars) for meeting the damages caused by the deluge in different districts.
