Iraqi Paper Slams US Threats Against Iraq

A state-run Iraqi paper Monday lashed out at the "silly hostile threats" of the United States against Iraq, saying the threats have led to the isolation of the US government at home and abroad.
"The isolation of the American administration is due to its silly hostile threats and its frail pretexts against Iraq," the Al-Jumhuriya paper said in its Monday editorial.
The paper criticised US President George W. Bush and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld for turning a deaf ear to "the voices of rational people all over the world," including the "opposition eveninside America," against their aggressive threats against Iraq.
Bush has accused Iraq of pursuing weapons of mass destruction and supporting terrorism, and repeatedly vowed to achieve a "regimechange" in Iraq.
The Bush administration has recently been piling up its threats to oust Iraqi President Saddam Hussein and the prospect of a US-ledwar on the country is on the horizon.
But many countries in the world, including most Arab and European countries, have voiced their objection to military strikesagainst Iraq.
In the face of growing US saber-rattling, Iraq has remained defiant, vowing to defend against any aggression.
"The evil aggressive intentions against Iraq will be defeated byIraqi people with steadfastness and under the leadership of President Saddam Hussein," the Al-Jumhuriya said.
