Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Sunday that the Palestinian National Authority's (PNA) acceptance of the "Gaza first" plan was "a trick" ahead of the Palestinian-US talks held late last week.
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said Sunday that the Palestinian National Authority's (PNA) acceptance of the "Gaza first" plan was "a trick" ahead of the Palestinian-US talks held late last week.
Sharon made the remarks during the weekly cabinet meeting on Sunday. He also stressed that "Arafat stands at the head of terror,no one is counting on him."
Earlier in the day, Palestinian National Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat said he was encouraged by the several days of "very positive talks" between the PNA and the United States last week.
Israeli Defense Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer discussed the planlast week with PNA Interior Minister Abdel Razek Yehiyeh and Mohammed Dahlan, security advisor to Arafat.
Under the "Gaza first" plan initiated by Ben Eliezer, the Israeli army would first withdraw from the Gaza Strip to the positions it held before September 28, 2000 when the bloody conflict between the two sides erupted.
Israel would also transfer the security burden in those areas tothe PNA, according to the plan.
The plan is to serve as a "pilot plan" and if the Palestinians manage to prevent terror and violence in the cities where the Israel Defense Forces evacuated, the plan will be extended to include other PNA-controlled areas.
