China Dominates Opening Day of Asian Athletics Championship

China dominated the opening day of the 14th Asian Ahtletics Championship with two goldmedals and one new Asian record Friday in Sri Lanka, Colombo.

China dominated the opening day of the 14th Asian Ahtletics Championship with two goldmedals and one new Asian record Friday in Sri Lanka, Colombo.

Gu Yuan of China became the first Asian women ever to throw thehammer past the 70-meter barrier on Friday. She also won China the first of two gold medals at the championship on the opening day.

Gu threw the hammer away to 71.10 meters to beat the previous Asian record of 68.08 meters set by another Chinese athlete Liu Yinghui in Shanghai three months ago.

"I'm absolutely delighted to start China's gold hunt in the Asian championship. This is a big boost to my aspirations for winning an Asian Games gold medal." said Gu, who won the event in 1998 in Fukuoka of Japan.

The Asian Games will be held from September 29 to October 14 inPusan, South Korea.

Li Yanfeng gave the second gold for China as she took the titleof the women's discus with a throw of 60.06 meters.

Qatar also had a gold medal on Friday as Ahmed Ibrahim Warsama took the title of men's 10,000 meters with a time of 30 minutes 31.5 seconds.

Warsama's compatriot Awad Aman Majid finished second with 30:33.50, followed by Jagannath Lakade of India in the third place at 30:51.20.
