South Korean President Kim Dae-jung Friday designated Chang Dae-whan, president of the Maeil Business Newspaper, as prime minister.
The nomination of Chang still needs the National Assembly's approval after a confirmation hearing in the parliament.
However, the biggest opposition political party Grand National Party (GNP) enjoyed sweeping victory in last day's parliament by-elections of gaining 11 among total 13 seats, and thus became the absolute majority in the National Assembly.
"Prime Minister-designate Chang has taken the lead in turning South Korea into a knowledge-based information society," and "we expect him to make a big contribution to advancing the Korean economy by reflecting market demands in state administration," the President Office Chief of Staff Park Jie-won was quoted as saying by the national news agency Yonhap News.
Chang, who earned a doctorate degree on international business at New York University, the United States, and has been serving aspresident of the leading business paper since 1988.
