Chen Shui-bian's 'Independence' Remarks Condemned in Macao
The so-called "both sides are countries" remark voiced by Chen Shui-bian, leader of the Taiwan authority, was condemned Thursday in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) as a serious attempt to split China.
The so-called "both sides are countries" remark voiced by Chen Shui-bian, leader of the Taiwan authority, was condemned Thursday in the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR) as a serious attempt to split China.
Chen's remarks revealed his intention to embark on the road of "Taiwan independence" and was exactly the same as the state-to-state statement masterminded by his predecessor Lee Teng-hui, saidUng Si Meng, director of the Macao Association of Neighborhood Communities, the largest social group in the SAR.
Ung, a deputy to the National People's Congress, said at a symposium that Chen's position was an open provocation to all the Chinese and a defiance to the internationally acknowledged "one China" principle. "It will surely sabotage the relations across the Taiwan Straits," he said.
Lei Hong, a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said it is a firm stance of all the Chinese to fight against Taiwan's splittist forces.
"Macao compatriots support the position of China's central government and warn a small splittist force in Taiwan against misjudging the current situation," he said.
Taiwan is part of China and the sovereignty and territorial integrity of China can't be separated, said Lo Weng, chairman of the Macao Overseas Chinese Association.
Chen's splitting activities are doomed to failure, he said.
