Organizers Brief IOC Delegation on Beijing's Olympic Preparations

Beijing organizers Thursday briefed a working group of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that Beijing's preparations for the Games are going smoothly.

Beijing organizers Thursday briefed a working group of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) that Beijing's preparations for the Games are going smoothly.

Liu Qi, President of Beijing Organizing Committee of the 2008 Olympic Games (BOCOG), said BOCOG's preparations for the Games mainly focused on a series of fundamental work since the IOC Coordination Commission's last visit to Beijing late April.

"Beijing has worked out an initial construction plan of Olympicprojects. The land exploitation and preparations for the bid for those projects are already under way," Liu said during Thursday's talks with the IOC working group.

The 23-strong IOC delegation, composed of the IOC Coordination Commission members and experts in marketing, traffic, environmental protection, security and finance, began their three-day visit to Beijing Wednesday, aiming to provide experiences on how to stage the quadrennial sporting event successfully.

As for the Olympic marketing, Liu said the "Olympic Look" project has been kicked off as BOCOG held an Olympic design conference early last month and started inviting tenders for the Olympic logo.

"By the end of this year, we will have the Olympic logo and a new emblem of BOCOG," Liu said. "Meanwhile, we are pacing up to pave the way for the Olympic marketing which will be carried out next year."

To ensure the fulfillment of preparatory work, BOCOG has taken a string of measures to enhance its efficiency and transparency. Altogether 14 departments, including the project, sporting and communication departments, has been set up so far.

"We have established an effective supervisory system and made corresponding regulations," said Liu, also mayor of the capital city.

"In the near future the public can raise questions about our work through a special telephone line and e-mail address. We are subject to their supervision."

Liu also said the "Beijing Olympic Action Plan", which will serve as the guideline for the city's development during the next six years, are being carried out.

Headed by Hein Verbruggen, the IOC working group Thursday also held discussions with BOCOG officials in specific fields and they will continue inspections on Friday.
