The Dangerous 'Each Side Is a Country' Theory: Commentary
Chen Shui-bian, the leader of the Taiwan authorities, has taken many roundabout ways made many gestures since he came to power, but he has only paid lip service to improving cross-Strait relations, he neither keeps good faith, nor has the least good will, still less has he taken any practical action.
Chen Shui-bian, the leader of the Taiwan authorities, has taken many roundabout ways made many gestures since he came to power, but he has only paid lip service to improving cross-Strait relations, he neither keeps good faith, nor has the least good will, still less has he taken any practical action.
Now, finally failing to control himself, he has openly hoisted the "Taiwan independence" banner as epitomized in his "each side is a country" theory, thus showing his political card featuring his insistence on pulling Taiwan into the blind alley of "Taiwan independence". This act of openly challenging the one-China principle has given a dangerous signal, Chinese at home and abroad cannot but keep high vigilance against it.
There is but one China in the world, both the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China, this is a historical fact no one can change, as well as a principle extensively recognized nowadays by the international community and conforming to the international law.
It is based precisely on this fact and principle that the Chinese mainland has put forward and been carrying out the basic principles of "peaceful reunification, and one country, two systems" and President Jiang Zemin's eight-point proposal for developing cross-Strait relations at the present stage and expediting the process of peaceful reunification of the motherland.
With the greatest sincerity and utmost efforts, we have been working hard for peaceful reunification of the motherland, but we absolutely not promise to renounce the use of force. This is the only correct way out for handling and improving cross-Strait relations. Facts have repeatedly proved its correctness.
Moving forward on the above-mentioned correct road will provide great hope and broad vistas for improving and developing cross-Strait ties, the vital interests of Taiwan compatriots will be guaranteed and constantly enhanced; Departing from this road means betraying the mainstream feeling of Taiwan compatriots for peace, development and stability and will lead cross-Strait relationship to tension, turbulence and even disaster.
As long as one does not lack the minimum political sensibility, one will not fail to see this general trend. However, Chen Shui-bian, misjudging the situation, has disregarded the vital interests of the Taiwan people in general, stripped off his political mask as expressed in his statement "Si Bu's and Yi Meiyou" ("I will not declare independence, I will not change the national title, I will not push forth the inclusion of the so-called "state-to-state" description in the 'constitution', and I will not promote a referendum to change the status quo in regard to the question of independence or unification. Furthermore, the abolition of the National Reunification Council or the National Reunification. Guidelines will not be an issue.), dished out his "each side is a country" theory, thus challenging the national will of the entire Chinese people including Taiwan compatriots, challenging the one-China principle that bears on the fate of cross-Strait relations and challenging the inevitable general trend of the improvement and development of cross-Strait relations, and once again pulling Taiwan into a dangerous verge. It can be said with certainty that if Chen clings obstinately to his own course, he will totally ruin the vital interests of Taiwan compatriots.
In today's world, just as Lee Teng-hui's "two states" theory has no international living space; so Chen Shui-bian's "each side is a country" theory, which is identical with Lee's theory, has no living space either. International anti-China forces, out of the consideration of their private interests, attempt to take a hand in the cross-Strait relations, an act without the least consideration of the vital interests of Taiwan compatriots.
Chen Shui-bian's attempt to get a lift offered by foreigners by imposing the plot of a handful of diehard "Taiwan independence" elements in the Island upon the masses of Taiwan people, so as to carry out their plot of "Taiwan independence", will not succeed either.
In the entire major pattern featuring the effort to safeguard and promote world peace and development, China is an important force, the international community can gain more benefits only when the one-China principle is respected and safeguarded, and stability and peace in the Asia-Pacific region can get more guarantee;
The tension of cross-Strait relationship and even the emergence of disastrous consequences resulted from the arrogance of the "Taiwan independence" forces can only bring enormous trouble to this world and cause serious damage to the situation featuring peace and stability in the Asia-Pacific region, those who will suffer most from which are still our Taiwan compatriots.
In this regard, whether Chen Shui-bian has noticed it or not, we deem it necessary here to give him a warning: Your "each side is a country" theory is bound to be a political game leading to a dangerous ending! You better immediately retract this "theory".
